Glad I got here early

Everybody says it, “I hate going to the doctors office.” I don’t have a phobia of doctors or anything like that, but I just hate the whole doctor office proccess.
This morning, for example, I needed to go see my dermatologist for my 6 month check-up. After you have skin cancer once, they like to check you a lot more often. Or, that is just the story they use to get you to come in for an office visit, and co-pay… But I digress…
I made my appointment for 9:10 am. This is approximately 1 hour after their office opens. I show up at 8:50 giving me plenty of time to fill out any paperwork and still be ahead of schedule. Turns out, paperwork wasn’t needed, so I sat.
On the waiting room tv I watched the last 10 minutes of the movie, “Rudy” on an ancient vcr and then watched the credits… Then the tv switched over to regular tv and I was treated to Regis and Kelly. Cruel!
At exactly 9:30 the nurse called my name, interupting Regis. How dare she? I was brought in to the exam room and asked some questions. Then, he nurse left. After 5 full minutes of waiting, I started typing this message…
How is it possible that an office can end up being 20 - 30 minutes behind schedule after only the first hour of being open? I just don’t get it.

Weight Loss Challenge

I want to lose weight. I want to get in to a regular routine of getting some exercise. I’ve said this before. It’s failed before. So, how do I set out to lose weight again, but actually be successful in doing so? I think the problem with my attempts in the past has usually been a lack of focus and no real goals.

Step 1: Set a goal
Step 2: Put a plan in place that will help me reach my goal
Step 3: Stick with the plan

The Goal
Lose 40 - 45 pounds in 6 months.

The Plan
This is actually going to be a work in progress. I realize I need to make some drastic changes. My eating habits are horrid. I’ve tried in the past to cut down on the fast food and especially the amount of soda I drink in a day. For me to be successful, this is where the most drastic of changes need to take place. So, if drastic is required, I’ve got to be willing to do it. So, what would be the most drastic? How about this. As of today, I’m going to replace my soda intake with water. This, for me is NOT going to be an easy step. But, I think it’s a mandatory one. My calorie intake from soda alone is enough to keep me fat the rest of my life.

Next is the exercise. At the moment, I do not have a membership to a gym. And, at least for the time being, I do not intend to get one. I am going to have to be self sufficient in this area for now. I have a treadmill at home and nothing stopping me from doing sit-ups, roller-blading, etc… I don’t think a gym membership is a requirement for getting in shape. In the past, having a gym membership has, I believe, done more harm than good. It works as a great demotivator for me when my schedule doesn’t allow me to get to the gym. So for now, I’ll get started at home. If I change my mind and decide to start going to the gym to work out, so be it.

Vitamins and detailed records are also a requirement. I am going to start taking a daily multi-vitamin and will start keeping a food journal to keep track of what I eat during a day and how much water I’m drinking.

So that’s it. I’m challenging myself to do this. But, since you’ve read this, you are now a part of it, too. If you see me drinking a soda, feel free to remove it from my hand (forcefully, if needed) and dispose of it. Thanks for your help. I’ll keep you posted.
